Anzac Day 2024, Sydney CBD
May 5, 2024It’s a yearly ritual. Attending the Anzac Day march in Sydney’s CBD. Not least because I love to watch the Chief Marshall direct proceedings. He does this with such aplomb - it’s mesmerising. Clearly many know and love him as much as I do. He’s approached often and frequently takes time to shake hands or clap old colleagues on the back.
There is also a Deputy Marshall, who takes a more measured approach. He lives in the shadows of the Chief Marshall but nevertheless embodies grace, dedication and duty. Every year I fear they may no longer be there - directing proceedings.
I can’t help but get emotional when I see the older soldiers marching. Some can barely walk, but with walking frames they insist on taking part. For those that can no longer walk distances, jeeps or vehicles carry them past the cheering crowds. I often see tears in their eyes as they embrace the moment.
What I love about this day is that it’s not just about the veterans, but the current armed forces join in as well as plenty of young children. It’s incredible to see how many nations joined the WW1 and WW2 war effort. Young and old, come together every year to commemorate: Lest We Forget.
