Australia Day 2023 - 10K Wheelchair Race

The Oz Day 10k Wheelchair Race is a fascinating combination of sporting prowess and overcoming physical challenges.  I have endless admiration these bold competitors.

In contrast to the tricky WugulOra dance performance shoot earlier, capturing these amazing wheelchair athletes was a doddle.  Shielded from the fierce sun under the arch of a bridge at Walsh Bay, I could snap away with nowt to obstruct my view.   Just me and a few ‘volies’.

I’m always amazed by the diversity of the racers, young and older, from a plethora of nations.  Many Japanese!  Madison de Rosario is a joy to behold - so strong and graceful as she speeds past.  She’s very photogenic and my camera loves her.

Had some fun with rear-curtain synch towards the end of my shoot.  It’s a technique that produces abstraction of/accentuates speed.

The quick or the dead when shooting from this location as they only do the full circuit twice.  So, I was chuffed to produce some great images that really captured the intensity, effort and fun of wheelchair racing.
